Road Toll
Road toll refers to all kinds of charges, fees and vignettes that are imposed to transport companies as a form of user-based financing for the use of road infrastructure. With road infrastructure is meant the public road in general, but can also consist of specific highways, bridges, crossings, tunnels, etc. In most countries the Eurovignette has been abandoned and has been replaced by some kind of toll system. For instance, in Germany the “LKW Maut” has been introduced, in France “Péage” has to be paid and in Belgium the ”kilometre charge” has been implemented. These road tolls are typically collected at toll booths or through an electronic On Bord Unit that collects the toll due during covered distance. In the UK all kind of charges for specific roads and crossing are to be paid. For instance the Dartford crossing charge, the Merseyflow charge, etc.
As all countries have their own regulations, tolls and charges, a profound and cross-border knowledge of the functioning of these systems and their implementation, is indispensable. ITL Attorneys has this knowledge at its disposal.
We regularly advise clients on how to be compliant to the different road tolls and provide legal assistance in case of disputes with the competent toll authorities. As most road toll regulations sanction violations with fines, which can often accumulate and take large proportions, ITLAttorneys frequently assist clients in contesting imposed fines.
